Instructions
- Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together into a bowl and set aside.
- Whisk the egg whites in a clean mixing bowl, gradually increasing speed; add granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
- Gently fold the sifted mixture into the egg whites; add food coloring if desired.
- Transfer batter into a piping bag; pipe heart shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bake macarons for 18 to 20 minutes.
- Beat softened butter in a bowl, gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and cream until spreadable; tint with more food coloring if desired.
- Once cooled, pipe buttercream on one macaron shell and sandwich with another.
- Refrigerate combined macarons for at least 24 hours before serving.
