Description

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Red food coloring (optional, for filling)

Instructions

  1. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour together into a bowl and set aside.
  2. Whisk the egg whites in a clean mixing bowl, gradually increasing speed; add granulated sugar until stiff peaks form.
  3. Gently fold the sifted mixture into the egg whites; add food coloring if desired.
  4. Transfer batter into a piping bag; pipe heart shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  5. Let the piped macarons rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C) and bake macarons for 18 to 20 minutes.
  7. Beat softened butter in a bowl, gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, salt, and cream until spreadable; tint with more food coloring if desired.
  8. Once cooled, pipe buttercream on one macaron shell and sandwich with another.
  9. Refrigerate combined macarons for at least 24 hours before serving.
